GLP-1
The downside of GLP-1 nobody preps you for
A GLP-1 does one thing brilliantly: it turns down your appetite. The problem is what happens next. Eat far less, and you do not only lose fat. You quietly stop taking in the nutrients that hold your muscle, your hair and your energy together.
Most people are handed a prescription and a dose schedule. Very few are told that the fastest way to blunt the good work is to under-eat the wrong things. This is the part nobody preps you for, and it is completely manageable once you know what to look for.Less food means fewer nutrients, not just fewer calories
When your plate shrinks by a third or more, your calories drop, but so does everything that rides along with food: protein, iron, zinc, vitamin D, B12 and calcium. On a small appetite these are the first to fall short, and the shortfall builds slowly enough that you do not notice until it shows up as thinning hair or a flat afternoon. The short version: a GLP-1 controls how much you eat. It does not tell your body what to eat. That job is still yours.
Three things to keep an eye on
1. Muscle
A meaningful share of weight lost on a GLP-1 can be lean mass rather than fat. Protein plus a little resistance training is what keeps that loss close to zero. Skip both, and you can end up lighter but weaker, with a slower metabolism to show for it.2. Hair
Shedding a couple of months in is common, and it is usually linked to rapid weight loss and low protein, iron and zinc, not the drug itself. The reassuring part: it typically grows back once intake steadies.3. Energy and mood
Low B12 and vitamin D creep in when portions stay small, and they show up as fatigue and a foggy head long before anything obvious. A baseline blood test is the simplest way to know where you stand. What actually helps
- Protein first. Aim for roughly your body weight in grams a day, and eat it early while your appetite is highest.
- Cover the six. Protein, iron, zinc, vitamin D, B12 and calcium are the usual gaps. Build meals around them.
- Ask for bloods. Ferritin, B12 and vitamin D give you a starting picture worth having.
- Follow your prescriber. Nutrition sits alongside your medication, never instead of it.
